BBC Scotland unveiled its referendum logo in January 2014, to coincide with the first Television audience debates and provide umbrella brand for its referendum documentaries. The first documentary “Our Friends in the North” was first broadcast on 25 November 2013, did not have the branding – it wasn’t until the second documentary Scotland’s Smoking Gun on 28 January 2014 that the referendum logo and package became active.

On-air use of the BBC emblem for the referendum – a ballot paper folded into a geographical representation of the country – began with Reporting Scotland in May 2014 alongside related content. National BBC News bulletins followed with use of the branding from 9 June 2014.
