5 News was one of Channel 5's flagship programmes when it launched on 30 March 1997. It was originally produced by ITN, which at the time also provided the news for Channel 4 and ITV.
A new look for 5 News was unveiled on 24 January 2000. The new look was introduced to co-incide with the departure of Kirsty Young, and the introduction of Andrea Catherwood as the main presenter of the programme.
A new look for 5 News on 14 January 2002, and after the station refreshed its presentation on 16 September 2002, the news titles also altered to 'Five News' to complement this.
A new look for Five News was launched on 6 October 2003. The theme was revamped for the first time since the programme's launch in 1997.
From 1 January 2005, Sky News was awarded the contract to provide the news for Five, replacing ITN, which had provided the channel's news service from the channel's launch.
A new look to Five News was unveiled on 18 February 2008, which also relaunched with a new presenter - Natasha Kaplinsky.
A new look for 5 News was launched on 14 February 2011.
After just over 8 years of Sky News providing news programmes for Channel 5, ITN took over the contract to produce 5 News from 20 February 2012.
From time to time, if a news event warrants it, 5 News will replace its 6.30pm programme NewsTalk Live with a special programme. This page documents some of the specials 5 News has covered.
5 News revamped its weekday 6.30pm programme to become "NewsTalk Live" - a dedicated home for topical news debate.
On 28 April 2014, 5 News was given a slight refresh.
Channel 5 adopted a new logo on Thursday 11th February 2016. 5 News' presentation was refreshed to reflect this.
To coincide with a move back to the headquarters of ITN, 5 News unveiled a new look on Monday, 31st October 2016.
